Trump bans entry of Venezuelans and 11 other nationalities

On June 4, President Trump issued Proclamation 10949, reactivating and expanding restrictive migration policies. Entry is fully banned for citizens of 12 countries—including Venezuela—while 7 others, including Cuba, face partial restrictions. The ban took effect on June 9, citing “national security risks” and inadequate migration verification systems.

This excludes lawful permanent residents, dual nationals, previously issued visa holders, athletes, and diplomats. Still, it caused significant uncertainty among tourism, student, and work visa holders. An advisory extended to 36 African countries was also issued: they have 60 days to improve documentation and cooperation, or face similar restrictions.

What this means for Venezuelans:

  • Visas suspended: B-1, B-2, F, M, and J visas issued before June 9 are temporarily suspended, with
    some exceptions.
  • Exempt individuals include: those with existing legal immigration status, dual nationality, adoptees, and individuals entering for national interest reasons (e.g., athletes).

Recommendations for migrants and professionals:

  • Confirm your status if you hold visas issued before June 9.
  • Explore alternative legal options—dual nationality, employment visas, or humanitarian programs.
  • Stay informed—policies are subject to review every 90 to 180 days.
  • Be legally prepared—Benme Legal is here to advise and safeguard your rights.
