“I’m scared! Can I be deported?”
By Héctor Benítez, attorney and president of Benme Legal
This is one of the questions we hear most often at our firm, and we understand why. The fear of deportation is real and affects the daily lives of thousands of families. That’s why our attorneys want to talk about it clearly and without fearmongering.
First things first: feeling afraid doesn’t mean you’re out of options. Many people believe that any contact with immigration authorities automatically ends in deportation, and that’s simply not true. There are processes, there are rights, and in many cases, there are defenses that can make all the difference.
A few key ideas to move from fear to action:
● Know your rights. You have the right to remain silent and to refuse to sign documents you don’t understand or don’t agree with before speaking to a lawyer.
● Not every case ends in deportation. Being in an immigration process is not the same as an immediate removal order. Every situation is different and deserves to be evaluated.
● Information is your best defense. Acting on rumors or on what “happened to someone else” can be dangerous. Every immigration story is unique.
● Don’t wait until the last minute. A timely consultation can help you understand your real situation and prepare ahead of time.
At Benme Legal, we’re here to help you turn that uncertainty into a plan. If you’re afraid, don’t face it alone: get informed, get advice, and make decisions from a place of knowledge, not fear.
