L-1A

The L-1A Intracompany Transferee Visa is designed for foreign executives or managers who have been employed for at least one continuous year in the past three years by a foreign corporation or its affiliate and are looking to transfer to its U.S. office. This visa category facilitates the temporary relocation of these high-level employees to manage or execute key functions within the U.S. branch, parent, subsidiary, or affiliate of the foreign company. For companies looking to establish a new office in the U.S., the visa allows an initial stay of one year; for existing offices, the initial stay can be up to three years. Additionally, the visa can be extended for a total of up to seven years.

L-1B

The L-1B visa enables U.S. employers to transfer employees with specialized knowledge from their affiliated foreign offices to the U.S. It also allows foreign companies without a U.S. office to send specialized knowledge employees to help establish one. The employees must have worked for the related foreign company for at least one year in the last three years and be coming to the U.S. to provide specialized knowledge services. The initial stay can be up to three years, extendable to a total of five years.
